AI Can Make
Us More
Human
From Human Resources to Human Beings
For two hundred years, we asked people to work like machines. Now the machines can do that work. This book shows you how to take back the rest.
We were never meant to be resources.
Somewhere along the way, work started asking people to act like machines. Be consistent. Be tireless. Follow the process. Hit the number. We built factories, then offices, then inboxes, and trained people to fit them.
We even named the department after it: Human Resources.
Most of us can feel it. The day fills with copying, checking, sorting, chasing and reporting. The parts of the work that made us want it, the judgment, the ideas, the people, get whatever time is left.
Now the machines can do the machine work.
AI is the first technology that can handle machine-like thinking: the drafting, the summarizing, the searching, the sorting. That’s why it feels threatening. It’s also why it’s the best chance we’ve had in two centuries to give people back the work only people can do.
AI isn’t coming for your humanity. It’s coming for the parts of your work that never needed it.
Machines for the mundane. People for the meaningful.
Hand it to AI
- Repeating. The same task, the same way, every time.
- Retrieving. Finding it, searching for it, looking it up.
- Recording. Notes, logs, data entry, reports.
- Routing. Sorting, scheduling, sending it to the right place.
Keep it human
- Judging. Deciding what matters and what’s right.
- Creating. Ideas nobody has asked for yet.
- Caring. Noticing, listening, showing up.
- Connecting. Trust, built one person at a time.
Design human work first. Then design AI around it.
Most people start with the tool and ask what it can do. This book starts with you and asks what only you can do.
-
01
Name your human work.
Find the parts of your work, and your life, that need your judgment, creativity, care and connection. Protect those first.
-
02
Hand off the machine work.
Give AI the repeating, retrieving, recording and routing. Let it be fast so you don’t have to be.
-
03
Reinvest the time on purpose.
Freed time disappears unless you claim it. Put it back into people, ideas and decisions before more busywork fills it.
AI won’t make us more human by default.
Left alone, AI does what every efficiency tool has done before it. Work gets faster, the list gets longer, and the hours we saved vanish into more output. Jobs made only of machine work start to shrink.
That isn’t an argument against AI. It’s an argument for design. What happens next depends on what we do with the time AI gives back. This book is about making that choice on purpose.
What you’ll walk away with
- A clear way to tell machine work from human work, in any job.
- A simple rule for deciding what to hand to AI and what to keep.
- A three-step method for redesigning your week around the work only you can do.
- Straight answers to the hard questions about jobs, burnout and what’s real.
- A new measure of progress: not how much more you produce, but how much more human your work becomes.
For anyone whose work started to feel like a machine’s job.
If AI worries you
You’ll see why the parts of you that matter most are the hardest to replace.
If you already use AI
You’ll learn how to keep the time it saves instead of losing it to more busywork.
If you lead people
You’ll get a way to bring AI into your team that makes their work more human, not less.
